Formatting Your Google AdSense Blocks

October 9th, 2007

By Cody Moya

After your web site has been accepted for inclusion in the Google AdSense program, the next step should be to format those ads properly in order to provide visitors to your web site with a pleasant and consistent viewing experience.  It may be a good idea to experiment with several different ad formats until you find the one that will provide maximum benefit and maximum profits.

Fortunately, Google provides a number of excellent tracking tools so it is easy to see the effect each formatting change will have on click-through rates and resulting revenues.

Google is very good at choosing the ads to display on their participating web sites, and at making sure that each ad is targeted and relevant to the content included on the web site.  It is important, however, for every owner of an AdSense participating web site to make his or her own decisions when it comes to formatting those special blocks of text.

It is important for the AdSense ads to look as if they are a natural part of the web site itself.   Studies have shown that ads which are able to blend in with the web site itself have a greater probability of being clicked than those that are made to stick out.  It is important that visitors to your web site are presented with a consistent look and feel across all the pages of the web sites, and that the ads served appear as if they are a natural part of the web site content.

There are a number of factors involved in this blending in process of course.  Some of the most critical factors to consider when deciding how to format an AdSense ad are the color of the text, the boldness of the text, the font used and the overall color scheme.   These factors should all be matched to those used on the rest of the web page.

If the web page is written in Times New Roman 12, the ad should be formatted with the same font.  The size of the font should also match that of the surrounding text as much as possible.

The Google AdSense program also provides web site owners with the option of putting a border around the ad.  In general, however, this is a bad idea, as it tends to accentuate the ad and make it stand out.  It is better to have the ad blend in with the surrounding web site, so it is generally best to pass on the border option.

When choosing colors and fonts, it is important to consider the overall color scheme of the web site itself.  It is important that the text be easily readable at a number of different color depths and screen resolutions, as ads that are not easily read are unlikely to ever be clicked.  It is a good idea to look at the web site at several different resolutions, and if possible on several different types of web browsers, in order to make sure that the ads appear legible and unobtrusive.

No matter what colors and formatting is used for the rest of the ads, however, the text links should always appear in blue.  Blue is the color that web site visitors are used to seeing for links, and it is better to use that perception to your advantage.  Change anything else you want to match the look and feel of your web site, but leave the text links in blue.

For those who are interested in going beyond text ads, the Google AdSense program does offer a number of graphic ads, also called image ads.  In general, however, text ads tend to work better and result in higher click through rates.  For most web sites, text ads will load faster and look better, but if Google thinks an image ad will be more appropriate one will be suggested.

Google AdSense and Google Policies

October 2nd, 2007

By Cody Moya

Since Google AdSense is part of Google, it is important for the owner of every participating web site to become familiar with the policies, rules and procedures which govern the program.  It is important to understand the criteria that Google uses when evaluating and approving web sites for inclusion in the program, and it is important to respect the rules once you are approved for participation.

Google has never publicly acknowledged details of the approval process it uses, and that approval process could legitimately be considered a trade secret.  Google does, however, publish its policies, and this provides web site owners with a good guideline for starting an AdSense business and remaining in compliance after you have been approved.

Google updates its policies on a regular basis to keep up with the ever changing world of technology, and it is a good idea for Google AdSense participants to keep abreast of these changes as they occur.

There are few things as important to the success of a web site than high quality useful content, and the Google AdSense program is certainly no exception.  Even though the exact approval criteria used by Google is a secret, content plays a large role in the approval of those web sites.  In fact, website content is the main criteria used, both in the approval of the site and in the selection of the best ads.

Most web sites rejected by the Google AdSense program are rejected because they do not contain enough quality content, or because they contain no content at all.  Web sites that consist of only links and filter content designed for search engines are routinely turned down for the Google AdSense program.

Those web sites that are solely focused on their own products and services are likely to be rejected as well.  Google is very smart and the techniques they use are very sophisticated.  Google AdSense has become quite adept at sorting out junk content and distinguishing it from real high quality content.

Those web sites that contain useful real content are those web sites that are most likely to be approved by Google, and those web sites are also the ones most likely to receive the best and most lucrative ads.  The content on a web site can and does take many forms, including how to instructions, informational article, opinion pieces, topics from the daily news, analysis of current events and so forth.

It is a good idea for web site owners to include several different articles relating to the subject at hand. This will help Google AdSense know that the site is legitimate, and it will also help to more sharply focus the ads on an ongoing basis.

Some businesses will also be rejected by the Google AdSense program if they are too highly specialized.  For these highly specialized businesses, the only ads that may be appropriate would be those from competitors, and those competitor ads would likely be blocked by Google, or by the owner of the web site.

Web sites that focus only on links in an attempt to generate search engine traffic and boost rankings will also generally be rejected by the Google AdSense program.  Even though these sites may rank highly in search engine queries, Google AdSense will generally reject them.

One of the easiest and most cost effective ways to let the Google AdSense program know that your site provides real content is to include a minimum of 30 or 40 informational articles as part of the web site.  For best results each article should be between 400 and 500 words long, and the articles should be updated from time to time to keep the content fresh and relevant.

If you are not up to writing the articles yourself, you can always hire a web copywriter to do the job for you, or use content that is freely available on the web.  If you do choose to hire a web copywriter, it is important to purchase “full rights’ to the articles.  This means that you own the articles and can do with them what you wish.  The best web copywriters are familiar with search engine optimization as well, and they can produce articles that help to boost search engine rankings in addition to helping AdSense target ad delivery.
